Private Travel

Private travel is something that our sales team, and our awesome guides, are very accustomed to. We occasionally find that when we have groups interested in travelling with us, whether that’s a special interest group, a family, or just a group of adventurous friends, they’d rather travel on their own private trip. A private trip means that you’ll be experiencing one of our awesome, carefully constructed itineraries, along with a local guide (or two, dependant on group size) with only the members of your group. If you like the look of one our trips, but think you'd like to make some changes to the itinerary, then check out our Custom Travel Page.

Which itineraries can we experience privately?

We currently run eight itineraries here in New Zealand, and we'd be happy to talk about offering any of them to your group for your private trip. You can find comprehensive details of each of our New Zealand itineraries here, or at the bottom of this page. Have a read of them, share them with your group, and if you reckon one of them is perfect for you then give us a shout!

Who are the intineraries suitable for?

Our guests come in all shapes and sizes, ages, physical ability, and nationality. Our guides are very professional, and are great at quickly learning the abilities and interests of those in a group. That ability allows them to tailor your trip to your group, and ensure everyone gets a level of physical activity they want, as well as lots of information on flora and fauna if that's your thing, or your favourite food at the end of a tough day's activity. Our guides are there to make sure your trip is the trip of a lifetime, check out the meet our guides page to see who you could be sharing your adventures with.

We love hosting families on our adventure trips, we welcome children and teenagers of all ages. Our 'Kea' itinerary is our New Zealand Family Adventure, however families often choose our other itineraries too, so we can make anything work!

What are the benefits of travelling privately?

Traveling privately with us allows you a little more flexibility on your adventure. For example if you’re not keen to go hiking in the rain, and your group all feel the same, it’s really easy for your guides to change up the itinerary to something that’ll keep everyone dry and warm, and still enjoying the best that New Zealand has to offer.

The kind of guests that we tend to welcome onto our adventures have lots in common. They’re usually outdoorsy folk, who love the fresh air. They also tend to be keen on some level of physical exertion, and that differs for everyone. But as a general rule our guests understand that you have to work for some of the most rewarding views New Zealand has to offer, and so getting off the bus and getting out there into it is a big part of the adventure. Having said that, we can’t always guarantee that you’ll click with everyone on board your adventure, but if you choose to travel privately you can decide who comes along! That way you’re all perfectly comfortable in one another’s company.

Transport

Our fleet of Toyota Coaster buses (either a 19 or 20 seater) are a really comfortable way to see all of the more accessible places our trips will take you. If you're a smaller group we also have minibuses. Our buses are all kitted out with drinkable water, a basket of fruit and snack bars, and a comfort kit containing sunscreen, wet wipes, and insect repellent - we'll take care of the little things for you! For most of the hand picked places we love getting you to, you'll have to jump off the bus and lace up those hiking boots, grab your kayak paddle, or pull on your cycling shorts! We promise the destination is always worth the journey.

If you’re interested in planning a private trip with your family, or group, then feel free to give us a call and we’ll get into the details.

    Outstanding Adventure Vacation

Our Active Adventures trip was outstanding! The entire process was a tremendous experience. Staff were responsive and friendly during the "sign up" phase. Our guides Jordie and Holly are two of the finest professional, friendly and knowledgeable guides we've had the pleasure to work with. Shout out for both of these wonderful people! They did a marvelous job managing group dynamics to ensure everyone was motivated and individual needs were met. Well trained and both have mastered the skillful art of quality customer service. Keep up the good work!

    Tui experience

This trip provided a good balance of activities with the necessary travel time to access the different parts of the South Island. The trip was well organized, and the guides were super. They accommodated our individual desires and capabilities, as well as being good cooks, leaders, and knowledgeable guides. Our group quickly melded into collegial and interesting companions, and that make the experience that much better. The itinerary provides a taste all that the South Island offers. I'm happy to have chosen this company to tour with.

I wasn't ready for the trip to end!

I don't even know where to begin...so let's start at the beginning. I spent the last year dreaming about going to New Zealand, trying to talk just one friend into going with me, and finally, with some encouragement from family, booking this trip as a first time solo traveler. And let me be clear- that was the best decision I could have made! I enjoyed every single minute of my trip and wouldn't change the experience of traveling solo for anything. From the moment I met Gary and Mel, I knew that I had made the right decision. They were welcoming, to all, from the moment they met us. Right away I knew I had nothing to worry about, and worry I did prior to the start of the trip. I could not have asked for a better group of travel mates; it was as if you had hand-picked who should be on the trip together. They were amazing! The experiences on the trip would not have been nearly as amazing if it wasn't for these awesome people with whom I had the good fortune to travel.
Gary and Mel were kind, patient, and so easy to be around. They answered every question a novice like myself asked, without ever making me feel like an idiot. Gary was witty, kept us going, and a super safe driver! ( I am not a big fan of mountain roads with cliffs on the edge that lead to instant death and not once did I fear for my life.) Mel's cooking...holy smokes was it good; so much so that the pounds I was so sure I would lose on the trip didn't happen. She has even inspired me to try to cook a couple of her dishes this winter. She made it look so easy, even with the varied diets of the group. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I had chatting with both Gary and Mel wherever we were: on the bus, hiking, eating or playing cards. They brought us all together.
Now, for the adventures! Every day was different from the day prior. I saw and experienced so many new things that I can't stop talking about it. I loved the really challenging hikes (Sealy Tarns and Alex Knob) and the slower paced treks through the rain forest and valleys. The night sky at Mt. Aspiring Hut is indescribable! While we were unable to go on the second overnight hike due to weather, Gary and Mel didn't miss a beat. We were so busy and had so much fun, even in the rain, that you would never have known that we were doing almost 3 days of alternate activities. Major kudos to them for this! I could keep going on how much I enjoyed every aspect of my trip. This was the first vacation I have been on where I didn't want it to end and it truly was the trip of a lifetime. I can't wait to book my next trip with Active Adventures!

    Another Memorable Trip with Active!

The Rimu trip was my 6th trip with Active Adventures and it again confirmed why I enjoy traveling with them. The trip was very well organized. The guides (local to New Zealand) were professional & FUN! We did so many activities that will forever be etched in my memory...kayaking Milford sound, hiking a section of the Routeburn Track, 3 day backpacking trip through Nelson Lakes. All amazing!
