Rimu tree (Dacrydium cupressinum)

rimu2

The rimu is the most common native conifer you’ll find around New Zealand. It can be found around much of the North Island and the lowland forests of the South Island, especially on the West Coast, where the densest populations can be seen. It’s a tall tree that can reach heights of up to 50m (165ft), when fully grown. As a young tree, it has bright olive-green weeping branches that are softly spiky to the touch, and as it matures these become drooping branches, both of which make it look very different from surrounding trees. The rimu is a member of the Podocarp family, and  has ‘male’ and ‘female’ trees, different to most conifers, which tend to have both male (pollen) and female (seed) cones on the same tree.

Rimus can live to a ripe old age – 1000 years is not unheard of, although 500-600 is probably more the norm. This slow-growing tree was the most common native tree that was milled for a long time, and many older houses will have the beautiful reddish-brown timber for polished and stained floor boards, doors and panels. Nowadays, the trees are protected from logging on public land and only limited logging occurs on private land, often extracted by helicopter. As a result, recycling rimu timber for furniture is a popular practice.

The rimu tree means a lot to us here at Active Adventures New Zealand. It's the name we gave to our signature trip and you’ll have the opportunity to see one up close while hiking on pretty much every adventure tour we run here in New Zealand.

    Trip of a life time

My wife and I planned this trip with some friends to try something new and to maximize the experience of New Zealand. We spent 8 days hiking, biking, and kayaking through the South Island. Every day was action packed with something different to do. We got to try new things, test a few of our limits that we wouldn't have normally done, and learn a few things about local culture along the way. I can't say enough good things about our guides Ben and Liana. They were enthusiastic about everything we did and full of information. They helped us push limits and get the most out of the experiences we had. Everyone I've told about our trip has been wowed by the awesome things we got to see and do.

    Awesome Tui Trip!

My husband and I traveled to New Zealand for a late honeymoon and our adventure started with the Tui Trip which couldn't have been better! Between the amazing places we visited along the South Island from our unbelievable guides who quickly became friends, the trip definitely exceeded our expectations! We quickly learned how kiwis truly cherish and appreciate what their beautiful country has to offer and are so thankful to have had such a wonderful experience. New Zealand will always hold a special place in our hearts, along with our memories of hiking, biking, cheers-ing, and chatting with new friends. Thank you Koru and Liana, for making our trip so unforgettable!

    North Island Kauri

The North Island was an amazing adventure. We were kept busy hiking, biking snorkelling and kayaking, and our guides were very easy going and helpful in every way. We saw and experienced more of the Maori culture, the large Kauri trees (words cannot describe), and felt the love and appreciation of the Maori people for the land, birds and all living species. It was great to have them guide us through the kauri forests. The trip is spit in half in the middle with a day in Aukland, and the first half we had 12 in the group and the second half there were 13 (A lot) in our group. I prefer smaller groups. The scenery was amazing, Natalie and Jasmine were amazing as well. An AMAZING trip! Loved it!
