New Zealand Nature

If you isolate a country for 80 million years you end up with an unusual and unique flora and fauna. That’s what happened to New Zealand and nowadays our curious collection of birds, sea mammals, fish, reptiles and plants is one of the major attractions for visitors to our national parks and wilderness areas. Prior to the arrival of humans some time before 1300AD, about 80% of New Zealand was forested.

Today, about 23% remains, much of which is included within our 14 national parks. In total, about 30% of our land area is under public ownership and protected to some degree. In addition, there are 32 marine parks located around the country. These areas provide ample opportunity for the adventurous and keen-eyed amongst us to experience some of the world’s most interesting and endangered species.

New Zealand Birds

In its isolation, New Zealand amazingly developed a unique ecosystem with no native land mammals! This led to the country housing a variety of birds, many fulfilling evolutionary niches normally occupied by mammals, and with no fear of predation, many lived and nested on the ground, with several flightless species. You can read more in our pages on birds of New Zealand.

Chris Darcy review of Rimu Trip

The term trip of a lifetime gets used far too frequently. This was one. The South Island of New Zealand is likely the most beautiful place on earth, pound for pound. Nowhere else can you find so much beautiful landscape, diverse landscapes and microclimates packed into such a small area, which can be travelled in such a short amount of time while still doing it justice. Our guides, Holly and Claire, were fantastic - wonderful dispositions, knowledgeable, tireless and attentive - and made the trip special. And Kiwis are some of the nicest folks on earth (after Canadians of course) - we didn't have a single negative experience the whole time we were there. If you've been thinking of going to New Zealand don't wait - you can't do better than this trip - just make sure you take extra memory cards for your camera.

    Amazing!

What a great trip! The scenery exceeded our already-high expectations! And the guides were so good (plus the fact that we would like to see New Zealand in the winter), we are already thinking about our next trip with Active Adventures!

One of the best trips I've been on.

Ken and Elder were such great guides and the passion they displayed was fantastic.

Very Glad We Added Kauri to Our Trip

We added Kauri to our Rimu trip because we wanted to spend more time with the Maori culture and see the north island. Our wishes were more than fulfilled by this excellent trip.

    Best Trip Ever

You go hiking, exert yourself, see spectacular views, and you think "this is the best day, it can't get better than this." Then you go kayaking, see wildlife, lush rain forest and red tinted water, all with the backdrop of snow capped mountains, and you think "no, this is the best day, it can't get better this. Then you go biking along a teal colored river and through a birch forest with snow capped mountains ringing a suddenly peaceful lake and you think, "okay, THIS is the best day." And then you drive to Milford Sound, gawk in awe at waterfalls tumbling down towering cliffs along the road and you get to the Sound and you kayak with dolphins, and you come to the realization, "this is my New Zealand trip, every day better than the last," so that on your last day when you are lying beneath the stars, staring at the Milky Way and the Southern Cross, you know you've experienced something beyond special.
